Information for Students

Would you like to get involved in research studies?

When we have an on-going research study undergraduate and graduate students can sometimes participate, thereby gaining experience and learning about how research is conducted. Usually this happens through an Independent Study with a faculty person; sometimes funds are available to pay student research assistants.

The kinds of activities you might be involved in include:

  • recruiting participants (calling families, traveling to preschools or the Museum of Life and Science in Durham)
  • collecting data (interacting with children, administering the study)
  • storing and analyzing data (requires some computer skills)

Students involved through an Independent Study are also required to read academic papers related to the project, meet regularly with the supervising faculty person, and write a 10-page paper about the study. Usually this involves registering for LING 395 (Group Mentored Research) for between 1-3 credit hours.

If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact Dr. Becker (see Contact tab above).
